Bad Teacher: Etcetera Theatre

This one woman show was written and performed by Erin Holland and directed by Grace O'Keefe, the pair are known as The Queens of Cups. The performance was first shown throughout the Camden fringe at the Etcetera Theatre throughout August 2021. As one of Erin's past pupils, the comedy of this piece was elevated even more, especially once I could identify the majority of Holland's characters, based around previous colleagues throughout her teaching career. The majority of the performance is fueled by the comedy of a tragic, yet relatable, 'Bad Teacher' struggling with the pressures of OFSTED and a dreaded Parent's evening. However, Holland's main character Evie shows a soft touch and adds some emotion to the piece by forming a bond with a young student suffering with self confidence which eventually leads to a shocking demise. I would argue the change of tone does not stump the effectiveness of the piece, it just adds another layer. In regards to the design they kept it very simple, a small stage with one singular chair used as a set piece and prop throughout, aided by a projection screen in the background. Albeit, clearly the piece was a somewhat-success as it will be showing again at the Underbelly, Edinburgh Fringe throughout the summer of 2022.
